Day 3: Trek from El Carrizal to El Mirador. We will explore the site of the pre-classic period. Many archaeologists think that this is the first Mayan City and dates before Christ. The ruins are similar to the ones in Tikal. The size of the city suggest that a very powerful government ruled the place. In El Mirador you will admire the tallest temple ever built by all the Mayan Empire. This temple, known as “El Tigre” is the most impressive structure of all the site and its height is over 80 meters, a size only compared with 3 foot ball fields. There are also other 200 structures inside the site, which is very big and most of the pyramids are still covered by vegetation. The reserve takes up to 16 squared km. of forest where we will set camp and rest for the next day. |
